A Message From Our President Susan McVicker-Wever

Fall has shown its spectacular beauty in our beautiful town of Chico. Christmas holidays are quickly approaching. As you make out your Christmas list, consider adding a donation to Chico Community Scholarship Association. Wishing you all peace on earth and thank you for opening your heart to help Chico area high school seniors with the gift of a college scholarship.  11/30/23

Our fall fundraiser event was quite successful. It was held at the Elks Lodge on October 18th. We received positive feedback from our attendees. The basket raffle items were abundant. The winners of our Grand Prizes were thrilled. Mark your calendars to attend next year's CCSA mixer. tickets are available from any of our members or on this website. Hope to see you next year. 10/30/23

Our CCSA Board has been active this summer planning our fundraiser mixer, which is typically held in October. This year it will be at the Elks Lodge in Chico, our second year at our new location. The food provided is delicious and the room is filled with a festive ambiance. Our members and community provide us with many wonderful gift baskets, a wine wagon, a FINDS’ recliner and tickets to a Giants’ game. The community’s support for our only fundraiser is vital to our continued success and much appreciated. Tickets are available at the door and through eventbrite. We hope to see you there!

Speaking of support, last school year our generous community helped us provide 156 graduating seniors with scholarships totaling $240,992. Included in these scholarships are two scholarships for four years from the Growdon Family and one scholarship for two years from the Habib Trust.  Our CCSA goal is to be able to award every student that qualifies a scholarship. I believe this goal can be reached with the help of our supporters.

I attended CSU Chico in the seventies. I believe my tuition hovered around the $100 mark, per semester. I shared a home on Mountain View Avenue (I apologize if you were my landlord) with two other girls, paying $125 per month each.  I rode my bike to school and worked at the bookstore on campus. My parents sent me $300 per month and paid for my books and tuition.  I was living the good life. A semester for a full-time student is now $4,034. Today the total for a year at Chico State is $24,754! My point is times have changed. Not every student is as fortunate as I was. We can help.  For $125 a month you can provide a $1500 Scholarship in your name.  That is the cost of my monthly rent in the 70’s. Today that is the cost of 2 bags of groceries or 2 tanks of gas.

We need your help to reach our goal of providing every qualifying student applicant a scholarship.

Sincerely,

Susan
